Everyday I’m hustlin’ hustlin’
Hustle, hustlin’ hustlin’

For this last blog I will be talking about the differences between artists that are considered underground, commercial, independent, and signed to a label. I saved this for my last blog because I think it is a good way to end this segment to my first series of blogs.

Underground Hip Hop

Underground Hip Hop is rap music performed without a label. Independent artists are associated with this term by signing with independent labels, or no labels at all. Underground rappers usually make their mark with the use of the internet, to become famous. They also talk about social and political issues that are happening in the world.

Back in the day, in the 80’s and 90’s, artists used to make CDs and cassettes to give out to people; but were only known in their town or city. Now, websites like YouTube help underground artists to make their mark under certain accounts. Other websites like SoundCloud, and Spinrilla, help artists get their mixtapes and songs out to the public as well for their fans to listen freely.

An example of an artist that was considered underground is Eminem; he was a solo artist and a member of the Detroit-based rap sextet. Another example would be Kendrick Lamar, he started off as underground; but still plays the part as an Underground rapper because of the social and class issues he talks about in his songs.

Commercial

This is any music that has hit mainstream radio or television. The music that you hear companies like XM Radio and your local radio stations play across their airlines is commercial because they usually only play one of the songs from the artists album to give them promotion for the fans to go check out the rest of the album. For example when Beyonce came out with Single Ladies that was her single to promote people to listen to her album.

Independent

Independent artists are people that handle all their work by themselves. The power of social media, setting up their own website and having access to all the free independent Hip Hop resources out there. An independent rapper can create, distribute and promote all from their computer.Rappers like Migos, Gucci Mane, and Rich Homie Quan are all independent artists because they promote and create their own music.

Signed to a Label

Signing with a major label may be more popular for an artist with their own label. When your music is approved by a record label, they basically buy from you the rights to an album-and produce; then promote and sell it. For example Drake and Nicki Minaj started under Young Money Entertainment and moved on to others as time has gone on.

Well my fellow followers we have come to an end of this segment of my blog. I have not yet figured out what I will be doing with my blogging page at this moment but once I figure out you guys will be the first to know. I’m just not sure if I want to continue with music or if I will change to more creative writings. If you have any suggestions, I am all for it — I love hearing your feedback! Y’all have been great, thank you for the likes, comments, follows, etc it was greatly appreciated.

Just Like Music

I look at music as being my secret getaway, in a sense. I like to escape through the lyrics; while enjoying the rhythm and flow of the beats.
